Putting your soul into the art
In an era in which images are endlessly spread and consumed by algorithms, Filip Van Rijsselberge tries to bring soul into the picture again.
His work forms a continuous multimedia scroll in which classic copper engravings and woodcuts merge with digital image editing and painting. By stacking the images vertically, a rhythmic image flow is created that refers to scrolling through our digital reality.
Inspired by sampling in contemporary music, he combines images from different visual worlds into an expressive collage. His work reflects a punk-like attitude: investigative, critical and always questioning the structure of our society.
The viewer is invited to navigate through the work and experience the tension between the images.

REPORT
Your work is narrative in a very free way: You give suggestions, in an associative way. You give a direction to the viewer. The figurations make part of a work in an “illogical” way, but very “natural”. The images sprout the illustrative and the figurative: The image finds itself because you deal precisely with figuration. Humour, punk, freedom... You create archetypal images and use visual elements to create certain focuses (sometimes reminiscent of Walter Swennen's work). They are images that stay with you. Painting over images, connecting graphics and painting works very freshly. Integrating graphics and digital work is also top notch!
Very strong work, super!
