Putting Your Soul into Art

Filip Van Rijsselberge’s work lies at the intersection of graphic expression and philosophical reflection. Through a contemporary visual practice, he explores how visual streams, digital perception, and societal shifts influence our collective consciousness.

Central to his work is the multimedia scroll as a metaphor for contemporary consciousness. In contrast to the logic of the algorithm, he creates his own visual algorithm, in which images, fragments, and references enter into dialogue with one another.

Classical copper engravings, woodcuts, digital image processing, photography, and painting merge into a continuous stream of images. By placing images vertically one below the other, a rhythmic sequence emerges that references the endless scrolling through our digital reality.

Inspired by sampling in contemporary music, Van Rijsselberge constructs a visual language in which different times, styles, and visual layers converge in new contexts.

Increasingly, he combines a main work with a second, smaller image. This second work functions not as an illustration, but as a visual echo or shift that intensifies the tension within the whole. As when scrolling through social media, a rhythm of attention and distraction, distance and proximity emerges.

The works are printed on Chinese rice paper, which is mounted on various substrates. This combination of fragility and material intensity heightens the tension between the ephemeral digital image and the physical presence of the work.

In contrast to the superficiality of algorithmic visual culture, Van Rijsselberge seeks to reintroduce soul, slowness, and concentration into the image.

REPORT

Your work is narrative in a very free way: You give suggestions, in an associative way. You give a direction to the viewer. The figurations make part of a work in an “illogical” way, but very “natural”. The images sprout the illustrative and the figurative: The image finds itself because you deal precisely with figuration. Humour, punk, freedom... You create archetypal images and use visual elements to create certain focuses (sometimes reminiscent of Walter Swennen's work). They are images that stay with you. Painting over images, connecting graphics and painting works very freshly. Integrating graphics and digital work is also top notch!

Very strong work, super!
